Avalanche C-chain - TPS
When talking about Avalanche TPS you often hear 4500 TPS mentioned, but that figure refers to non-EVM X-Chain. We are interested on the EVM-compatible C-chain. There seems not to be very good reliable data about max TPS on Avalanche C-chain, but 1000 TPS is often being mentioned. However, the C-chain has been quite a few times congested during past months and on these occasions the gas prices has been really sky rocketing. I have not personally been witnessing these congestions, and thus is bit difficult to know what kind of TPS figures and what types of transactions has been causing these.
Looking at the transaction data from their block explorer stats we can calculate their average transaction gas usage which was 192103 on 2022/04/12. C-chain gas limit per 2 second block is 8.000.000. This means that if they are handling their normal average transactions, 4.000.000 gas per second limit can fit only maximum of 20,82 transactions. To be fair average transactions on the C-chain with gas usage of around 190 000 is bit high and I think fairer number to use would be around 160 000 as it is closer to other EVM chain average transaction gas usage. By using this number we could reach TPS of 26.66. Looking at the same statistics page you can see some peak max TPS figures of well over 300 TPS, but those have clearly been special batches of abnormally small transactions. Based on this I have to conclude on max sustainable real-word usage TPS of 27.
